Welcome back Tiger!!
I often ask myself – what does being sustainable mean to a West Indian?
This thought popped back into my head on Sunday as I was preparing to heat up the last of my Carrot + Coriander soup, and to wash out the empties for recycling.
I didn’t grow up learning how to recycle, or the importance of our actions affecting the environment. I grew up watching Mom wash out all the finished food containers – Icecream tubs, mayonnaise jars, Chinese takeaway container etc. This was her system for growing our Tupperware collection…on a budget. She saw the value in ‘re-using’ Nothing would waste in our house.
Today, society calls those methods- recycling, living sustainably. I still call that being a Barbadian. An ingenious method of reusing what you already have. Buy one- use nuff! Passed down to me from mom- and will a strategy I pass down to my little monkeys one day.
The soup was suuuuuuupa tasty BTW 👊
Until next time
