Whilst we be looking for the perfect rose and selection of chocolates for our loved ones, in the animal kingdom… amour is expressed in a different way. I’m a bit of a softy when it comes to Valentines, so here are 5 fun facts I found on ‘WILD LOVE’.
#1 Pussy’s be at it all day, every day….
The oldest leopard, (living in captivity) is the grand old age of 24!! Making it into the Guinness Book of records in 2015.
Leopards are solitary creatures. However during mating season amour is in the air. The leopard can mate on average every 15 minutes for up to 250 times a day for 5 days straight. Blimy! This is due to the fact that females don’t waste energy ovulating every 28 days. Instead only when stimulated by a male will the female start ovulation.
2# Pigeons are no players…
Pigeons are 1 of 11 other species of animal which mate with the same partner for life.
The other 10 are: Gibbon apes , wolves, termites, coyotes , barn owls ,beavers , bald eagles, golden eagles, condors, swans, brolga cranes , French angel fish, sandhill cranes, prions, red-tailed hawks , anglerfish , ospreys, prairie voles + black vultures.
#3 There’s more to love than being pretty….
Peacocks can actually fly but spend most of their time on the ground. They woo females with their fanned out plumage ,displaying vibrant colours and eye spots at the end of their feathers.
EYE SPOTS CLOSE UP VIEW
Recently scientists have discovered that Peahen (female) can be quite particular when deciding on her mate.
Paying little attention to the size of his fan. She will ignore a male who come up short on the number of eye spots on the end of the feathers.
Brothers can’t catch a break. Lol.
4# Size Matters when you’re horny…
Only the sheep with the biggest horns gets first pickings of his choice of ewes to get jiggy with .The largest recorded horns are of an Alberta bighorn..
These measured an amazing 209-1/8 inches approx. 531 cm . The horns were found in the foothills south of Hinton, Alta Canada.
#5 Divorce doesn’t come easy to a Swan….
Swans are often depicted as a symbol of love. Probably due to the fact that these majestic birds also choose to spend their existence loving that one special someone. However, if there is a failure with nesting or if a mate passes, the remaining Swan will find a new mate.
In Greek Mythology. Zeus disguised himself as a Swan to seduce Leda the Queen of the Spartans and wife to Tyndareus. Leda went on to lay a couple of eggs…..
OkAAAAAY 😦 I’m gonna leave that sentence hanging as this story gets really messed from there.
Seriously…the lengths some men will go to eh?? 🙂
